Cooking Essentials

Just a little advanced announcement about an upcoming class beginning in May or June of 2009, for all domestic goddesses who want advanced training in the fine art of making sauces, salsas and guacamole- Mexican style.
This picture is of a gift from our district leader, elder McElvain. Its Mexican name is Tecolote y Molcajete or mortar and pestle (remember everything in the Spanish language is backwards).
Mom is picking up recipes whenever we eat with members. The essential tools for making these delicious concoctions are this stone ware for the kitchen. Mom will be practicing for the next eight months and will happily share her new found culinary wizardry with anyone who has a yen for authentic Mexican cuisine. We were thinking about buying one for ourselves, but Elder McElvain beat us to it. He said it was for all the nice things we have done for the Cuautitlan zone. It was an awfully thoughtful and sweet gesture on his part.
Elder McElvain is a tall, blond haired, blue eyed, elder from Centralia Washington. He reminds me a lot of Sean, and has similar interests as DJ and Sean; power lifting, wrestling and football. He’s only been on his mission for six months and he is a district leader already, just like Andrew. I think he will be a zone leader very soon. I am including a picture of Elder McElvain also.

Love to all, Dad and Mom,
Grandpa and Grandma

Very cool. I love the morter. Is it possible to get one of those. If yes I know Corinne and I are going to want one. Let us know and we will send money to buy it and to mail it.

Were all very excited to see some of the things mom is learning. Corinne is really excited to see the magic of Salt and Limes and she said you have a recipt for tomitos? (Green Tomatoes) that she is really excited. But I guess thats about 150 baptisms from now at the rate you guys are going.

I am going to put a letter here that I received from Preston he titled MY FIRST FLIGHT. He is training to become a pilot and I though you might like this email I received from Him Love Cordell

Hey everyone, I had my first flight with my instructor today, it lasted exactly one hour and it was awesome, thought you guys might want to hear about it.

We were scheduled to fly at Noon, but there was some complications in an earlier flight that delayed our time by about 15 minutes. The weather was pretty calm with only a slight breeze, and the temp in the high 70's.

My instructor Ed, and I talked for a few minutes about what we would be doing today the plan was for me to learn to preflight the plane and to learn how to taxi.

Ed taught me the proper preflight procedures, it was pretty easy as I am quite familiar with most of the systems from my experience at Kitfox. Preflight took about 15-20 minutes because it was my first time, (should take 5-10 minutes in the future)

We got in the airplane and followed the start up procedure. Engine running we got to the most intimidating part of the day for me, announcing our intentions on the radio.

Ed told me what to say and gave me one practice try at it. Our aircraft N number (probably redundant to say number) is N20CT. So I had to say "Caldwell traffic, Cessna two zero charlie tango on the ramp taxi to runway 12." that sounds a lot easier to say than it is but I did it ok.

We followed the taxi way to the runway where we did a pretakeoff check. This was supposed to be as far as we got today but because I am so awesome I was already a pro at taxiing. (two i's in the spelling?)

Ed took charge of the radio and we pulled up to the runway and held short, he announced our intention to take off. We lined up on the runway and went for it I held the plane pretty close to the center line and we were airborne at 65 knots.

I held the climb of about 400 feet per minute to 4500' where I leveled off and trimmed the airplene for level flight. We practiced some climbs and decents, coordinating throttle and elevator to maintain the desired air speed.

Next I learned to make coordinated turns at a bank of 10, 20, 30, and 45 degrees.
After that I combined the skills to perform climbing turns, and decending turns of varying bank angle

Next we climbed to 5500 ' and I learned to controll the plane at the minimum controllable flight speed (about 32 knots with full flaps) and to transition back into cruise speed.

Next I learned how to detect and recover from departure stalls (engine power on) I had a little trouble with this, I was tending to nose the airplane down too much, it still recovers from the stall but requires more altitude than is necessary.

finally we made our way back to the airport, Ed took controll of the throttle, but I flew the plane all the way on to the ground. We taxiied to the fuel pump and I filled up the plane which is where I had my only real embarassment of the day, I spilled about 1/2 cup of fuel on each wing when I accidently over filled the tanks.

We pulled the plane back to the tiedown, shut down all the systems, and secured the plane.

When we got inside Ed told me how well I had done, I thought I did pretty well, but I was really surprised when he told me that we nearly completed 5 one hour lessons in one hour.

I will be flying again on Friday, at 1:00 we are going to work on pattern entry, takeoffs and landings, I'm pretty excited.

I hope to fly 2 to 3 times a week until I have my private pilot certificate. I'll keep you guys updated every now and then.

Preston

Mom and Dad

We had a get together at our house yesterday (Sunday) As you know we get together at either the Riches or the Bushes on alternating Sundays. We has a good time. I was looking around thinking, what is different her that might be of news or interesting to Grandma and Grandpa that I could report.

So part of it is not important but is interesting to observe. For instance, Jessica and Levi were not there, which is not big deal its just interesting because they have their own lives apart from us which is as it should be. So they had something they needed to do and were there and my guess is that they are happy wherever they are because they are a married couple as they should be.

Colie and Rhen were not here because they are in their tiny newly married apartment in Rexburg starting their lives together. Reports are that Colie loves her new job at her new bank and Rhen is buried in homework and each day they both come home from school and work and fix dinner and take care of each other. So the pattern continues.

Sam and Drew WERE there yesterday, which is a positive change. Drews family does not get together in the same way our family does. He doesnt think of family first. So it was nice to have him and Sam over with us. They are not married and it does not look like this is on the horizon either. For some reason Sam does not see the value of need. And I say Sam because Sam could easily define the lines that wont be crossed be she does not. Either way it was great having them as part of the family.

DJ was not there. He has a girl friend now, and shes cute. If I were him I would be with her to. HE has asked her to the prom and she has said yes. She went to the wedding reception with DJ and she came to a pool party this summer at our house also. She is very sweet and the Ruthie and Donald say she's a nice girl. Whatever happens there, probably the same as with most first girlfrinds, Nothing, its taking up DJs time and you cant know that unless someone tells you.

Dani and Preston were at our house to. So whats happened there? Preston is at home at our house. When hes hungry he goes to the fridge, he has his own opinion, he shares stories. He and Danni are in love and are friends. He pithces in around the house when were working. He has become part of the family and Corinne and I love him. Plus his family is becoming part of our family. I have gone golfing with his brothers and brother in law and we have a good time. So hes great.

Jacob and Issac are growing. I think their birthday is next week, they will be seven, so its next week or the week following that. Jamie and Tim have started school, not a lot there.

I think Ruthie gets more and more beautiful each time I see her. Don Ran 22 miles saturday and is ready for the marathon in St George.

Corinne is still the greatest hose and sister in the world and a goddess besides. Her arm still hurts her a lot but not as bad as it was. There for a couple of weeks she was in so much pain she would cry at nights and it really hurt her and you know how tough she is. Now It hurts her on occasion but not all the time and not so badly. Work for her is stressful but you would be really proud of her. She runs a small corporation and does a great job. They love her there. Its stressful for her but she is awesome.

Im running out of time right now but I will write more later.
